President Roosevelt died, unfortunately, putting Harry S. Truman in charge. On November 24, 1944, bombs fell in Tokyo. In the air, above the city, 80 B-29s flew. The first time around, the B-29s did very little damage because they kept missing their targets. As a result of losing fuel and realizing there would not be enough fuel to get to America, Iwo Jima was invaded. In the attempt to capture Iwo Jima, over 6,800 troops were killed.
While airfield were being prepared in Iwo Jima, General Curtis LeMay decided to take a different approach. In doing so, he changed his strategy. He commanded the B-29s to drop bombs filled with napalm. However, despite the damage the firebombs caused, Japan showed no sign of surrendering by spring of 1945. As a result, Americans capture Okinawa.
By this point, Truman had already found a new type of weapon--the atomic bomb. The project to build these atomic bombs was known as the Manhattan Project. There was many debates on where to use the bomb because it killed many civilians, but Truman decided to drop these atomic weapons on Hiroshima and Nagasaki because it would save American lives. As a result, many lives were lost in Japan.
